Ingredients

  • 1 fl oz vodka
  • 1 1/2 fl oz Kahlua or another coffee liqueur
  • 1 1/2 fl oz hot espresso strong coffee, or prepared instant coffee
  • 1 1/2 fl oz unsweetened creamer of choice
  • 1/2 tsp cocoa powder
  • 1/4 tsp peppermint extract
  • 1/4 tsp vanilla extract
  • Optional: melted chocolate and crushed candy canes to rim your glass
  • Garnish: cacao powder or chopped chocolate and coffee beans

Method

  1. Collect every ingredient. Brew the espresso or coffee, then measure the vodka, Kahlua, cocoa powder, and flavor extracts. If you like, coat martini glasses with crushed peppermint candy (refer to notes).
  2. Load a cocktail shaker with ample ice. Incorporate all ingredients, pouring the hot espresso in last to prevent the ice from melting instantly.
  3. Close the shaker and shake hard for 15–30 seconds. Sufficient aeration creates the foam on the final drink, so shake longer than you think necessary.
  4. Filter into a glass (chilled if preferred), add garnish, and savor!
